Maybe I'm using Youtube wrong, but I don't care
Here’s what I’ve learned about Youtube, since last month I mentioned having a video repository somewhere.
There are 3 types of Youtube videos you can post. I’m not counting Shorts, because that’s a whole separate thing.
Public: This one seems obvious, but just in case, it means that everyone gets to see it. Everybody. Pretty much every
Private: Just you or people you pick get to watch it, but the other people have to use a specific link each time they want to watch. It’s difficult, but man, it’s really locked down.
Unlisted: I can best describe this as “not public but also not private”. It won’t appear on your channel or in search, but it IS out there if someone has the link to it, and could add it to a playlist. As a test, I put it in a blog post last year. It’s not great, but hey, you’ll only find this video on this blog post! Best example I can think of for this is if you had a niche landing page website for a specific time, and it needed a video and you didn’t want it floating around after “Black Friday 2024”.

Anyway, my kids and I spent 2025 making goofy videos. I saved them to my Youtube account as private videos and I shared them to the Youtube account we have on the tv. And that’s it. That’s the only place we can watch them.
Becoming mega-Youtube-famous sounds like a nightmare. So why not just use it to make fun stuff and share it with the handful of people you want to share it with?
