Make your 1st video in under 5 minutes

Plus a quality Dad joke

Hey everyone!

For the last few weeks, I wrote about which apps are helpful for editing videos on your phone. Now it’s time to put that into practice and start making videos.

Trust me, it’s simple. All you need is:

Once you have your joke, write the first part on the first note. Write the punch line on the other.

Shot #1: Pick a good background, then while holding your phone in one hand, hit record and lift the 1st Post-it into the video frame. Hold it in place for 3-5 seconds.

Shot #2: Pick another good background, and repeat it with the 2nd Post-It, making sure to hold it for 3-5 seconds as well.

Now that you have your 2 shots, open up any editor on your phone. For quick video edits like this, I use VN Video Editor.

Hello! to editing apps: VN video editor
Over the next 3 weeks, I’m covering my favorite phone video editors that I use. They are all free to download! I’ll cover the pros and cons of each one. They’re different enough that you could use all 3 together for different types of videos you make…

Add the two shots to your timeline, and trim the clips right before your hand enters the video frame. If you covered the phone lens with your hand instead, line up the end of Shot #1 when the screen is completed covered. In Shot #2, start with the screen completely covered.

This is one of those edits where you play around with the timing and try and find the natural rhythm based on how long it takes to read what’s on the note. If you cut away too short, no one can read all the words. If you take too long, the video can feel slow or boring.

So by using 2 post-it notes and your phone’s camera, you can quickly start to teach yourself how to edit your own videos.
